We are inundated constantly with advertisements for anti-aging techniques
including Botox, lasers, and plastic surgery. And I am often asked what “magic
pills” I have to help reverse aging. Unfortunately I don’t
have any magic pills, but there are several things people can do to help
slow down the inevitable process of aging. And if your budget is tight,
these options are much easier on the pocket book as well.
How old are we suppose to live?
There are many debates on this, but in Discover magazine, November 2003
issue, it was reported that scientists now say that we are genetically
suppose to live to be 120 years old. If this is the case, why is the
average life span only 65-80 (depending on which chart you look at)?
Do the Basics
If you really want to slow down aging – start with the basics.
The first and most basic of actions are to eat right, exercise, get adequate
rest and lower your stress level. Eating right means eating organic fruits
and vegetables, complex carbohydrates high in fiber such as millet, kamut,
quinoa, spelt, buckwheat and brown rice and organic meats. Eliminating
sugar, wheat, dairy and refined foods from a diet has made a huge difference
in many peoples lives - health wise. Exercise, even just simple walking
can also help your body in so many beneficial ways, allowing your body
to move your interstitial fluid – which helps to move toxins out
of your body and nutrients to the cells. Getting adequate rest is important
to help your body repair damages to cells and rebuild new cells. And
lowering your stress level can have huge anti-aging effects – as
the saying goes – stress kills – and when the cells in our
bodies are stressed, at some point they will let us know via pain, or
illness that things are not working correctly.
Think of it this way – every person has a bottle of life or energy – and
every time you eat something bad like junk food, or don’t exercise
off that Krispy Kreme, or let your stressful job make your blood pressure
increase to a dangerous level – you empty a little bit of that
life out. If you smoke or do drugs, that lets out even more life. Unfortunately,
not everyone was handed a full bottle of life – some people’s
bottles are emptier than others. This can because of what they were handed
down from their parents, or it could be how well they have taken care
of their body so far. The aging process is sometimes seen as bringing
on frailty and increased vulnerability to disease and injury. But, these
changes are sped up by factors such as poor diet, insufficient exercise,
and stressful life-style.
Either way, doing the basics will make a difference. You might not notice
it tomorrow or next week, or even next month – but you will notice
it next year and the year after that. Taking care of your body on the
inside physically and emotionally will make a huge difference on what
you see on the outside.
What is your biological age?
Not everyone eats a perfect diet. And even if you did, not everyone pays
total attention to their bodies to discover not only what they need
on a daily or monthly basis but also what they may be deficient in
right now – as that will change constantly. There are many types
of analysis available that can help show you what your body may be
deficient in, such as hair analysis, urine analysis, saliva analysis,
and blood analysis. Some of these tests offer a biological age with
the test – letting you know how old your body is on the inside – or
how stressed your body is on the inside which can often speed up the
aging process. Learning what you are deficient in can also help to
prevent a “weakness” in your body, and therefore specific
aging signs as well. Check with your health professional to find out
which test might be best for you – these tests are also typically
much more affordable than other anti-aging techniques on the market,
and can actually help you to slow down your bodies aging processes
while improving your health, especially if you do decide to use the
other expensive techniques (lasers, etc) as well, you may find that
your results will last longer when working on the inside of your body
as well as the outside.
Only One Scientific Proven Method
In February 2000, Discover magazine, had an article on Roy Walford, professor
emeritus of pathology at the University of California, Los Angeles,
School of Medicine. The article discusses Walford and his experiences
in BioSphere. Although BioSphere was considered by many not to be as
successful as was hoped – one positive thing that came out of
it was that they were able to prove, that eating less helps reduce
aging. Of course this isn’t too exciting for many people and
isn’t even an option for some people – and before this
goal is taken on – you should check with your health professional.

Fountain of Youth Book
There is a book that many people have found to have powerful anti-aging
capabilities – it is called Ancient Secret of the Fountain of
Youth by Peter Kelder, it is also known to many people as the 5 Tibetan
Rites (there are in fact 6 exercises – but the 6th is only to
be performed if abstaining from sexual activity). The story in the
book is about a man who was trying to find the fountain of youth – and
went to Tibet while on his search and was taught these 6 exercises.
He came back the United States, and his friend was shocked because
his hair was no longer gray, and he looked so much younger! The book
is also available as a video with the actual exercises being performed
so you can follow along, and they also have a cookbook available as
well. The exercises are fairly easy to perform, and you are to start
very slowly. If one exercise is particularly difficult to do, that
shows how out of balance that particular meridian is for your body.
But as the book and video both explain, don’t give up – if
you keep doing them – you will definitely see results – but
you have do them to see results!
Other Helpful Supplements
It seems like daily we are told of new anti-aging products. I thought
I would list a few items that our customers have given us considerable
feedback on – so that others can also benefit from them as well.
Topical Enzyme Spray
Enzymes are extremely important for our bodies. They help hold molecules
together, help us digest our food, carry toxins out of our bodies,
help to repair and build new tissues, help create other enzymes for
our brain, and are the glue that help hold calcium in our bones. As
we age, enzymes are depleted out of our bodies causing our bodies to
age. Taking enzymes internally can help your body do the important
youthful tasks required to keep your body young. It is widely known
that we absorb nutrients through our skin, better then our digestive
system – for example – there are so many patches on the
market that release medicine via our skin. Using Topical enzyme sprays
can be extremely beneficial for aging signs such as thinning hair,
aging/liver spots, or thinning or weakened skin. Our customers are
constantly telling us about positive results with our enzyme spray.
DHEA
DHEA (dehydroeplandrosterone) is a naturally occurring steroid nutrient
produced in the adrenal cortex gland and is the most abundant steroid
in the blood and brain tissue. DHEA is converted to important and essential
hormones in the body, acting as a precursor to other hormones. Generally
the level of DHEA in people drops about 80% between the ages of 20
and 65. Studies have shown promise in the areas of degenerative diseases,
the process of aging and obesity. These effects may be due to its ability
to inhibit an enzyme that is used to produce fat its ability to boost
anti-carcinogenic activity in the body.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants, vitamin C in particular is well-known for it’s beneficial
effects on the immune system and certain anti-aging qualities have also
been attributed as well. It is known in the scientific community that
free radicals damage body tissues. Similar to when you cut open an apple
and leave it on the counter – it will start to turn brown and age.
The same process is happening to us, only much slower. Antioxidants – like
sprinkling lemon juice on the apple, work to slow down that aging process.
There are many types of antioxidants – Vitamin A, B, C, E, pine
bark, grape seed, and CoQ10 just to name a few.
IGF-1
Human growth hormone (HGH), which is naturally produced by the body,
is necessary for normal development, promoting the growth of new tissue,
endurance, and strengthening the immune system. It has been estimated
that by the age 30 we lose about 14% of this hormone each decade. Synthetic
drug substitutes can have the same effects but also bring with them
many side effects. IGF-1, a metabolite of HGH, can offer many of the
benefits of HGH without the harmful side effects. IGF-1 can helps the
body provide glucose (blood sugar), helping to preserve muscle mass.
Deer antler velvet, a source of IGF-1, has been used as a traditional
remedy in China for over 10,000 years. Taken internally – best
as a spray for easier absorption, many people have experienced many
health benefits from IGF-1.
Colostrum
Also known as mothers’ milk, colostrum (from cows) contains immunoglobulins,
specific antibodies, and broad based immune enhancers. Colostrum is an
antioxidant with insulin-like and immune factors that support the body
in healing, balance blood sugars, promote muscle health, and boost the
bodies metabolism of fat for fuel. Thinking that this is what babies
first eat after birth, it is considered by many to be “perfect
food” in feeding the body. If you were not breast fed as a child,
you could be missing the important antibodies – and taking colostrom
can help restore those to help your body strengthen your immune system
and your health overall.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA)
This includes flax seed oil, lecithin, black currant oil, emu oil, olive
oil, grape seed oil, omega 3 oils (fish oils), borage oil, etc. Essential
oils are so important in feeding the nervous system, the brain, our
skin and hair, and circulatory system. Providing essential fatty oils
to your body is like changing the oil in your car – so very necessary
to keep things moving smoothly. If your body doesn’t have enough
EFA’s, the arteries can get brittle and crack, the brain, which
is mostly made up of EFA’s – will not work optimally, our
joints will ache and hurt if there is no EFA’s to lubricate,
and our skin and hair can get dried out excessively causing rashes
and other skin disorders. There are many popular EFA’s in liquid,
pill form and lotions and creams to help repair skin damage such as
wrinkles, and prevent future aging as well.
Pregnenolone
Pregnenolone is a hormone from wild yam root that can easily be converted
into other hormones necessary for overall hormone balance and a feeling
of well-being. Pregenenolone levels decrease as we age, and studies
have shown that even minute quantities increased the ability of mice
to learn and navigate mazes. In addition, human studies have confirmed
the benefits for brain function and age-related wear in the joints.
This is a fairly inexpensive product that is also good for many women
with menopause symptoms.
Ginko and Gota Kola
These two herbs have a long history of improving brain function, boosting
memory and alertness. Both of these also have reputations for promoting
longevity. Taken together, this combination can help people with poor
concentration, age spots, poor circulation, Alzheimer’s and senility.
Ginsengs
There are many types of ginsengs, but all are considered to be adaptagenic,
which means they help the body adapt to changes – or deal with
stress. And helping to reduce stress in the body is a great way to
stop aging.
Whatever method you choose to use to help slow down your aging process – be
sure to check with your health professional to find the best solution
for your wonderful body. And remember, getting older means you are getting
better!
